Wine to Go

GenImageAustralia’s Hardy Wine company has introduced a one serving wine bottle with a detachable plastic wine glass. They call it the Shuttle and say that it will redefine the way people will drink their wine. You will be able to choose between Shiraz and Chardonnay packaged in a single serve acrylic wine bottle sealed by its own acrylic wine glass.

The wine is being released in Australia now with a trial in the UK. It will probably be released world wide soon. It is designed mainly for sporting and cultural events where glassware is not permitted, but they also see it boosting bar sales by increasing serving efficiency and speed.

When I first saw this, I thought that it looked really cool and was a really good idea. Then I started thinking about all of these bottles and glasses going into landfill or into the recycling stream. Once again we are forgetting about the other R’s in reduce, re-use, recycle.

I think this is an interesting idea and a pleasing design, but I will be passing it by. I find it interesting that Hardy is going this way when so many other wine companies are moving towards more environmentally friendly and easier to recycle packaging like Tetra packs.

I’ve been meaning to email you about this. The wine thing is just the tip of the iceburg. When I see commercials for these disposible cleaning products, it nearly makes me sick. How hard is it to take a cloth and wipe your furniture? But No! we need disposible cleaning cloths! How hard is it to clean your toilet? But No! we need disposible toilet brushes! Etc Etc. A lot of my “Mom” friends have been buying these products due to convenience, but what about the garbage?! What happened to the days of washing a cloth and reusing it?

Also, Dollar Store toys and cheap toys. How many I throw out a week that are broken and just silly? Let’s not forget about all the McDonald’s Happy Meal toys that we Mother’s secretly find a “new” place for (ex. the garbage!) because we can’t stand all the clutter. All this plastic going into our land fills-scary! We actually got a bag full of McDonalds toys from a relative-what do I do with it all!? Also, the packaging on children’s toys. It’s almost obscene! Twist ties, plastic, screws, all just for a DOLL! CRAZY! I actually feel guilty opening these packages and throwing it out. I also got some chocolates for Christmas and the packaging was almost embarrassing! A fancy plastic container that was thrown out in minutes, because they were served and eaten so fast. I thought, “I would have enjoyed these as much in a paper bag. What do I do with this plastic container now? What a shameful waste.”

Speaking of cleaning products. I buy, as much as I can, natural products (such as, Melaluca. Safe for the kids (they could dring the grout cleaner and only get a tummy ache) and safe for the environment. If people didn’t buy this toxic stuff it wouldn’t be around, maybe as each one of us refuses to buy it, the companies will see the cry for safer, more environmentally safe items.

P.S. I have an old farmer friend that uses cloth hankies and always has. How our generation has changed that we don’t even think of using such a thing. Think of the kleenex and boxes we go through in a month! When just a generation before us used reusable, cloth hankies. Sounds like a small thing, but becomes a a big thing when it is all added up.

Thanks for your postings. It is inspiring and causes one to think more outside of their own little world. We are all connected. What one does, affects the whole.
