A Big Scare

006I thought that I lost Daisy tonight. She has been crazy full of energy lately because she hasn’t been getting enough exercise. She hates the cold and usually refuses to go for walks, or if she does go, she digs in after a few minutes. Some days, it is even a struggle to get her outside to pee.

Today is a bit warmer, -4°C, so she is less reluctant to go out and has been racing around the lanes I’ve dug for her around the back yard. A few minutes ago, I let her out and she took off. No problem, she was probably tearing around the yard like before, but by the time I got out there she was gone and I heard barking in the front yard.

I ran down the driveway to catch her, but it was too late. She was running across the road to see the neighbour and a minivan was tearing down the road. He slammed on the brakes, but the roads are slushy and slippery and he kept sliding into her. I was right there as I heard a sickening thud and she went under the van which continued to slide for another six feet.

Finally it came to a stop and I didn’t hear a thing. I raced around the van searching for her and finally found her staring out at me from under the engine. I carefully pulled her out without a whimper. I apologized to the driver as he apologized to me, but she seemed okay, so I quickly brought her inside.

She was a very lucky dog tonight. She has a number of cuts, a bit of a burn on her tail and seems a bit stiff, but she is already ripping around the house again and playing on my guilt for treats. I wish I could say some good will come of this and she will gain a healthy respect for cars, but knowing her, I doubt it.
